Bank of Communications starts IPO price bidding

BEIJING, April 18 (Xinhua) -- The Bank of Communications, China's fifth-largest lender, began Wednesday to accept bids that will determine the price of shares in its initial public offering.

The bidding will last till next Monday in major Chinese cities of Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou, said the Kong Kong-listed bank in a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange on Wednesday.

It said the offer will be open to subscribers from institutional investors next Tuesday and Wednesday and those from retail investors next Wednesday, adding the IPO will be priced next Thursday.

The bank, in which HSBC Holdings Plc. holds 19.9 percent stake, plans to issue 3.2 billion A-shares, accounting for 6.5 percent of the expanded stock capital.


East Texas car enthusiast auctions his collection

Later this week, car enthusiasts from all over the world will be in Marshall, Texas for an auction like none before here. An area businessman is selling off his collection, which includes 55 rare cars, 33 motorcylces, and dozens of other unique items.

East Texas businessman Gene Ponder knows what he likes and that's cars and only the classics. Money is no longer an issue for this man, who turned an East Texas cabinet making company into an international business. Over the past 35 years, he's amassed his collection, he has 62 today, but has owned about 200.

All of his cars are going on the auction block. Ponder is 65 and recent family health problems made him re-assess his hobby and put them up for sale. An international auction house will sell off the cars, which are expected to bring a hefty sum and with more than 500 bidders expected things could get interesting and expensive.

A large group of private equity firms are lining up to bid for Thomson Corp.'s learning division, which it put up for sale early this year, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The bidders include a consortium made up of Bain Capital Management, Thomas H. Lee Partners, the Blackstone Group along with Bertelsmann, the privately-owned German media company; a second bidding group is made up of Providence Equity Partners, which is possibly teaming with one other investor, and has the learning division's management's on its side, according to the sources.
