59th Avenue project nears, City awards $6.2 M bids

It will be easier to ride a bike or turn into Thunderbird Conservation Park soon as improvements to 59th Avenue between Deer Valley and Pinnacle Peak roads are set to begin this spring.

Glendale City Council approved a total bid of $6,289,556 million during a March 13 meeting at the City Council Chambers, 5850 W. Glendale Ave.

City Council awarded Meadow Valley Contractors $6,194,544 and Stantec Consulting $95,012.

According to Vice Mayor Manny Martinez, the improvement project has been in the bid process for more than a year.

"Bids went out last fall and only one came back that was a lot higher than estimates," Mr. Martinez said. He explained city staff studied the proposal and looked at ways to trim project costs. The project was re-bid in fall 2006.

eBay Scrambles Egg Sellers' Listings

You might not think of eBay as a marketplace for eggs, but some sellers who raise poultry rely on it to reach buyers who are looking for hatching eggs. But according to these "chicken sellers," as one described herself, eBay closed down hundreds of auctions on April 3rd because the sellers offered to send the merchandise via Priority Mail rather than Overnight Express.

A seller who wished to remain anonymous called the shipping policy absurd, "because a freshly laid egg is NOT alive until it is incubated. We were not given any warning AT ALL. We have all lost money due to our auctions being cancelled WITHOUT NOTICE," she wrote in an email.

In fact, she said, "Many of us also exchange eggs in this way to add new blood to our flocks and to help multiply endangered species of poultry.

Kuwaiti company wins bidding for Saudi mobile license

DUBAI: Mobile Telecommunications, the biggest mobile phone operator in Kuwait, said it had agreed to pay $6.1 billion for the third mobile license offered by Saudi Arabia.

Mobile Telecommunications, or MTC, based in Kuwait, termed the Saudi market "attractive" in the statement it released Saturday announcing the agreement. MTC beat six competing consortiums with its bid of 22.9 billion riyals.

MTC shares fell Sunday by 60 fils, or 1.3 percent, to close at 4,740 fils in Kuwait. Earlier in the session they fell as much as their daily limit of 100 fils, to 4,700 fils. The stock has gained 43 percent this year, valuing the company at 5.98 billion dinars.

Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter, is the biggest economy in the Gulf and has a lower mobile phone penetration rate than its neighbors.
