| Auctions | Maritime and doll collections up for sale
Bidders will be able to wave their paddles for almost a solid week, beginning with three successive sales tomorrow through Monday at Freeman's and ending with a two-day doll auction at Alderfer's. Tomorrow's sale at Freeman's, starting at 10 a.m. at the gallery at 1808 Chestnut St., will feature a maritime collection including ship's wheels, binnacles, sextants, chronometers, pendant logs (the kind you drag in the water behind a vessel to determine its speed), saluting cannons, and scrimshaw. Most of the 127 lots are expected to bring three-figure prices, but a 19th-century American School portrait of a four-master is expected to sell for $3,000 to $5,000, according to the catalog (available at www.freemansauction.com). Sunday's session, also beginning at 10 a.m. is devoted to Americana, a longtime April tradition timed to coincide with the Philadelphia Antiques Show.
EBay auctions fight genocide
LIVERMORE Getting glamorous for a good cause is the idea behind a Livermore resident's eBay auction that will end Tuesday. Daphne K. McCorery, 40, is auctioning off 13 pieces of her own art, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Genocide Intervention Network. McCorery said she joined the network several months ago after reading about it in a People magazine article. "I'm starting to be more aware and concerned what's going on not just in local communities, but abroad," she said. "Eventually I'd like to do a lot more fundraising." A caregiver in her day job, McCorery said she's been creating artwork all her life, most recently focusing on collages before getting started on her newest form: glam art. She has combined her love for collages andfashion illustration into fashion-friendly pieces.
Flags Hold Silent Auction for Black Jerseys
(PORT HURON, MICH.) - Through the end of the playoffs, the Port Huron Flags will have their game-worn black jerseys available for purchase in a silent auction, with multiple venues for fans to place their bids. Via the website, www.porthuronflags.net, the fan-favorite black jerseys are available to view, listed with current high bids. Interested parties may submit their maximum price online or by calling Lorraine Lixey at (810) 982-FLAG. Additionally, during all home playoff games, the bid lists will be available at the merchandise table. If a jersey's highest maximum internet bid is eclipsed with a live bid during a game, the online list will be appropriately updated at the conclusion of the game. Upon final completion of the post-season, the team will host a Season's End Event, with date and time to be determined.
Net auctioneer's profit jumps
EBay Inc., the world's largest online auction company, says its first-quarter profit soared 52 per cent after the company raised fees on items for sale and held more auctions outside the United States. Net income climbed to $377.2 million (U.S.), or 27 cents a share, from $248.3 million, or 17 cents, a year earlier, eBay said yesterday. Excluding some expenses, eBay earned 33 cents, three cents more than analysts estimated. Revenue increased 27 per cent to $1.77 billion as a weaker U.S. dollar and demand in western Europe boosted results internationally. Last year, eBay chief executive officer Meg Whitman more than doubled fees for merchants selling goods at fixed prices. A higher percentage of listings are now leading to sales. "They're still the gorilla," said Rachel Wakefield, portfolio manager for Coldstream Capital Management in Portland, Ore.
