Net auctioneer's profit jumps

EBay Inc., the world's largest online auction company, says its first-quarter profit soared 52 per cent after the company raised fees on items for sale and held more auctions outside the United States.

Net income climbed to $377.2 million (U.S.), or 27 cents a share, from $248.3 million, or 17 cents, a year earlier, eBay said yesterday. Excluding some expenses, eBay earned 33 cents, three cents more than analysts estimated.

Revenue increased 27 per cent to $1.77 billion as a weaker U.S. dollar and demand in western Europe boosted results internationally.

Last year, eBay chief executive officer Meg Whitman more than doubled fees for merchants selling goods at fixed prices. A higher percentage of listings are now leading to sales.

"They're still the gorilla," said Rachel Wakefield, portfolio manager for Coldstream Capital Management in Portland, Ore.

Ohio State, Towson in position to earn auto bids

Who took a hit this week, and who improved their stock? Our staff takes a look around the college lacrosse world at the teams that are rising and falling.

Teams on the rise
Ohio State
Last season, the Buckeyes stumbled out of the gates, dropped two competitive conference games to Denver and Notre Dame later in the season and finished out of the running for the GWLL's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. But it's a new year for the boys from Columbus. Ohio State avenged that loss to the Pioneers on Sunday with a crucial 10-9 overtime win, its fourth straight conference victory, setting up a huge showdown of GWLL unbeatens when the Buckeyes welcome the Irish on Saturday with an auto bid to the tournament on the line. -- Craig Johnson

Towson
I don't know if rise is exactly the word for the Tigers.

Tazara barred from re-tendered bids

THE High Court's Land Division has restrained the Tanzania-Zambia Railways Authority (TAZARA), its agents or assignees, from opening the re-tendered bids scheduled for today concerning sale of a semi-developed estate of 6.4 acres valued at over 3bn/-.

Judge Stella Longway gave the order last Friday in favour of Ocean View Apartments Limited (applicant) in respect of the Tazara Estate property No. 3, pending determination of an application for temporary injunction set for hearing on June 11, this year.

A counsel from Law Associates (Advocates), Mr Rosan Mbwambo, for the applicant, filed the application the same day under certificate of urgency. A Tazara (respondent) had set to open the bids today for the estate located near SabaSaba Grounds at Kurasini area.
