Manheim Conference Call Part 3: Upstream, Midstream and Downstream ...

Consignors have been relying on auto auctions since the 1930s, so changing the mindset and the business practice of vehicle remarketing takes time. . . It's clear, however, that upstream remarketing is on the rise and quickly being adopted, based on its practicality and profitability.

- Julie Anders, vice president of strategy and delivery for Emercent Solutions, Vehicle Remarketing January/February 2004

Today I wanted to conclude my 3 part series that emerged as a result of Manheim's first quarter conference call. The first two parts focused on the new and used vehicle sales environments inspired by commentary Manheim's Chief Economist, Thomas Webb gave on the call. And part 3 focuses on this idea of upstream, midstream, and downstream remarketing.

You've heard me discuss for sometime the idea of the internet changing the auto retail environment.

Auctions | Maritime and doll collections up for sale

Bidders will be able to wave their paddles for almost a solid week, beginning with three successive sales tomorrow through Monday at Freeman's and ending with a two-day doll auction at Alderfer's.

Tomorrow's sale at Freeman's, starting at 10 a.m. at the gallery at 1808 Chestnut St., will feature a maritime collection including ship's wheels, binnacles, sextants, chronometers, pendant logs (the kind you drag in the water behind a vessel to determine its speed), saluting cannons, and scrimshaw.

Most of the 127 lots are expected to bring three-figure prices, but a 19th-century American School portrait of a four-master is expected to sell for $3,000 to $5,000, according to the catalog (available at www.freemansauction.com).

Sunday's session, also beginning at 10 a.m. is devoted to Americana, a longtime April tradition timed to coincide with the Philadelphia Antiques Show.

Bob Perani part of group bidding for Generals

Perani told The Journal on Saturday night that he is part of a group that has reached an agreement to purchase the United Hockey League club from owner Khaled M. Shukairy. How much of the club they control has yet to be decided.

"There is a deal," Perani said between the second and third periods of the Generals' playoff Game 6 with the Kalamazoo Wings. "I've guaranteed certain things. We've got some things to work out. I'm excited. I think we'll sell a lot of tickets through businesses.

"We have to have people feel they can come down here and get their money's worth and be entertained."

Perani said the five other individuals who could be part of the ownership group include Chuck Glasscock, one of his vice presidents at Perani's Hockey World, which is the largest independent distributor of hockey equipment in the world.

Three to face robbery charges in auto auction theft

Three Chambersburg men, who police say forcibly entered a Freedom Township auto auction four years ago after escaping from prison, will face burglary-related charges in Adams County court.

Eric Orion Plummer, 26, of the 1900 block of Philadelphia Avenue; Ralph Frederick Hepfer Jr., 28, of the 2000 block of Philadelphia Avenue; and Robert Lee Thomas Jr., 25, of the 1800 block of Guilford Station Road, have been charged.

Plummer waived charges to Adams County court last week, and the cases against Hepfer and Thomas have been forwarded to county court.

State police said the trio escaped from Franklin County Prison at 8 p.m. March 19, 2003, stole a truck from a Chambersburg business and broke into the Gettysburg Auto Auction some time overnight. They were later captured in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
