Techniques for Selling Antiques and Collectibles

Is your house getting smaller? Of course not. But your living space may be shrinking, thanks to the ever-increasing numbers of objects you're dragging into it.

If that's the case, you aren't alone. More and more Americans are insulating their homes with antiques and collectibles. In some cases, people are living under "a virtual avalanche of clutter," as the Associated Press put it in a 2005 report.

Maybe it's time to start selling off some of the unwanted or unnecessary possessions that are crowding you. Heck, even if your living space is organized enough to make Felix Unger proud, you may be itching for a little more elbow room.

Internet auctions, of course, have made the task of selling our "stuff" far simpler than in the prehistoric days of the 1980s and earlier.

EBay posts better than expected profits

EBay Inc posted better than expected profits in the first quarter as several of its newer businesses compensated for disappointing results in its mainstay auction service.

The faster-growing units include shopping.com, a price comparison site; some classified listing sites; a service to let online merchants accept credit cards; and Skype, the online voice chat service.

"We are on track with our well-crafted portfolio," Meg Whitman, eBay's chief executive, said in an interview after the earnings report was published by the firm on Wednesday.

The results sent eBay's stock up about 3 percent in after-hours trading.

Overall, the company earned US$377 million in the first quarter, up 52 percent from a year earlier. Excluding charges related to stock-based compensation and some other items, the company earned US$0.33 a share, above the US$0.29 average that analysts had predicted.

Auction pictures archive life in the fast lane

THE legend of the father and son heroes who broke 20 land and water speed records between them is set to feature at an upcoming auction in Cambridgeshire.

Malcolm Campbell and his son Donald lived on the edge of human endeavour.

Born in 1885 in Kent, Sir Malcolm was the first person to drive a car over 300mph. His son died 32 years later attempting the same speed on water, aged 45.

Now a collection of glass "magic lantern" slides is being sold by Cheffins at an auction in Sutton near Ely on Saturday.

There are 188 pictures, each 8cm by 8cm, in the collection which chronicles the incredible lives of the two men.

Some of the slides show Sir Malcolm's record attempts at Saltburn in 1922, Fanoe and Pendine around 1924 and Daytona in 1928 and 1934.
