Jazz it up for Mozart

Just when I thought I had seen every way in the book to have a dinner-auction fundraiser, along comes an affair to benefit not a hospital, school or welfare agency, but a dead man. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived more than 200 years ago, but his music refuses to die.

This weekend marks the 14th annual Chef's Showcase Jazz Brunch and Auction held in Lake in the Hills as a benefit for the Woodstock Mozart Festival. In case you have never heard this band of noble musicians, you have missed out on the finest performed Mozart west of Symphony Center in Chicago. I have never heard such exciting and period Mozart performances. Salzburg, Austria may have the big Mozart Festival each summer, but we have a great mini-version right in our own backyard.

At the Mozart brunch, you can enjoy the food from 21 top area restaurants and caterers, and the Chef's Showcase Jazz Brunch and Auction is worth the drive.

Volvo used car prices strenghten across the range

Volvo Car UK has seen used car prices strengthen across its range over the past four months following a change in strategy for used car disposal.

Volvo has traditionally sold all of its 6-12 month old used cars direct to its dealer network through closed physical and online auctions run by British Car Auctions (BCA). Since October 2006, Volvo used cars have been available through BCA open auction, with an average of 20% being snapped up by buyers from outside the dealer network.

This positive demand is reflected in used car valuation guides from both CAP and Glasss, with .

Plan commission fights to power tariff-based bidding

NEW DELHI: The power ministry's attempt to give a quiet burial to the tariff-based competitive route for the hydel sector has run into trouble. The proposed move to a cost-plus regime for hydro power was considered by some states such as Uttaranchal, Himachal Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh. However, the states continued to award projects to private players on considerations other than tariff. The Planning Commission isn't in favour of stopping the route. It is making a last ditch attempt to make tariff-based competitive bidding work for hydro power projects. For the 11th Plan, the commission has suggested setting up a hydro power viability fund that will allow developers to defer a portion of the tariff to be recovered from consumers after the first 10 years of the project. The proposed fund has been suggested to offset the high cost of generation in the initial 4-5 years of the projects.

Louisville eclipses million-dollar milestone in surplus sales

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Mayor Jerry Abramson today announced that the city has "unloaded" more than a million dollars worth of surplus government vehicles, equipment and other items through online auctions.

Metro Government sells obsolete and other surplus items through its website, LouisvilleKy.gov, and GovDeals.com, an online service similar to eBay. The $3,760 sale of a Case International 585 tractor to a bidder in Cookeville, Tenn., recently brought the total funds generated through the online auctions to more than $1 million.

"The online auctions are a creative way this government is operating efficiently and effectively for our citizens," Abramson said. "We're unloading items that have outlived their useful life for government, and in doing so creating a revenue stream and reducing warehouse space."

Abramson said the online auctions often generate more money than traditional auction-house auctions because items are up for bids around the clock and the online auctions allow more people - virtually from anywhere - to participate.
