Modest Mouse, Shins, Decemberists Swag in Art Auction

Buckman Elementary School, an arts magnet school in Portland's public system, is rife with the cool, artsy kids. And these cool, artsy kids-- along with some high-profile, indie rock favorites-- have donated some items to be auctioned in benefit of the school; they're no mere pinch-pot ashtray castoffs, either. In addition to a fly-fishing trip and jaunts to the Sonoma wine country, a series of hand-decorated mini-guitars and other swag from the likes of the Decemberists and Carson Ellis, Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock, the Shins, Stephen Malkmus and newest Jick Janet Weiss, Sam Coombs of Quasi, and the Dandy Warhols will go up for the good cause. The Art Rocks auction takes place in two parts: the first-- organized by Sleater-Kinney pillar and Buckman parent Corin Tucker-- goes down web-ways April 22, when online bidders can stake their claim on those hand-decorated mini-guitars via eBay (keyword: Buckman).

eBay beats expectations, raises outlook

SAN FRANCISCO - Online auction leader eBay today reported quarterly results that beat Wall Street expectations and said its outlook for the rest of the year would be at the high end of analysts' predictions.

Shares of eBay jumped as much as 6 per cent after the company posted a 52 per cent jump in net profit on a 27 per cent revenue rise, led by growth in its core auctions business and the rising prominence of international sales.

"I would say it was a very strong quarter across the board," Chief Executive Meg Whitman said in an interview. "We at the top end of analysts' predictions, which ranged from US$1.27 ($1.72) to US$1.34, based on Reuters Estimates data.

"Overall it was a good report card," said Martin Pyykkonen, an analyst with Global Crown Capital.

Cook Library to host author Caroline Preston and silent auction

Caroline Preston, author of the popular new novel "Gatsby's Girl," will be making a special appearance for Cook Memorial Public Library District patrons on April 19.

"Gatsby's Girl" is based on the life of Lake Forest native Ginevra King, F. Scott Fitzgerald's first love and inspiration for "The Great Gatsby"'s Daisy Buchanan. Fitzgerald met the 16-year-old socialite at a dance in 1915 and wooed her with dozens of love letters. After a disastrous visit to Lake Forest, she threw him over, and Fitzgerald later cast her as a cold-hearted flirt in many of his stories and novels.

"The romance between Ginevra and F. Scott Fitzgerald is based on actual events, but the rest of the story is my invention," said Preston. "Fitzgerald was a fanatical record keeper. His letters, scrapbooks and diaries were a wonderful source of information for my novel."

The evening will begin at 6 p.m.
