Industry Update: Auction Industry Growth Continued in First ...

KANSAS CITY -- Gross sales revenues from auctions by NAA members in the first quarter of 2007 increased 2% over the same-time period one year ago, a study by the NAA has found. If this trend continues, this will translate into approximately $266 billion total revenue for 2007 for the entire auction industry, up from $257.2 billion in 2006, a projected 3.4% increase for all of 2007.

This suggests the possibility of a slightly slower growth in the live auction industry in 2007 compared to 2006, when a 7.1% growth rate occurred for all of 2006 over the previous year. The first quarter growth last year was 5.7%.

These are the findings documented in a quarterly report of auction industry growth being conducted by global market research firm MORPACE International on behalf of the National Auctioneers Association (NAA).

GENE SIMMONS Says He Was Blown Away By Success Of Dinner Auction ...

A&E network has announced its "Gene Simmons Family Jewels" charity auction raised a notable $76,770 for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Fans and supporters alike flocked to the auction from March 25 to April 4 to bid on a dinner with Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed, stars of the hit A&E television series "Gene Simmons Family Jewels" — making it the most watched item on eBay for the duration of the auction.

The auctioned VIP dinner drew over 200,000 unique visitors during the duration of the online auction. The winning bid of $75,100 was placed by Richard Craven of the U.K., who will enjoy a weekend of rock star treatment with three guests in Los Angeles. The package includes round trip air fare, two nights stay in deluxe accommodations, and the main attraction — an exclusive dinner with Gene and Shannon.

WOW 1: A Warning On Coles?

Sydney, Apr 18, 2007 (ACN Newswire) - Are theresigns the reported interest of Woolworths in the assets of its struggling rival, Coles, is just that, interest and nothing more?Speaking at the announcement of Woolworths third-quarter sales yesterday CEO, Michael Luscombe said that the retailer had signed an expression of interest in Coles general merchandise assets, which include Target and Officeworks. But he made it clear the document did not legally commit Woolworths to making an offer.''As I have said before, we do have the financial capacity to acquire Coles and other [assets].''We have signed an expression of interest; but that is not legally binding. We have expressed interest in general merchandise assets."We have previously stated that Woolworths will look to grow its business, and that would include Coles," Luscombe said. And Woolies has yet to get clearance from the ACCC to participate, even though one is not needed.

New Brunswick base bids farewell to fallen soldier

A Canadian Forces base in New Brunswick paid tribute to a comrade killed in Afghanistan Saturday, marking the end of a difficult week for Canada's military.

Trooper Patrick James Pentland, 23, a member of the Royal Canadian Dragoons who was killed in Afghanistan on April 11, was buried with full military honours on Saturday — the last funeral for eight soldiers killed during Canada's deadliest week of combat in Afghanistan.

The 800 mourners who attended the funeral service at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown near Fredericton, heard how he loved children so much he once asked about adopting an orphaned Afghan child.

"He loved children," Pastor Alex Varga told the funeral service.

Although the Dragoons are based at CFB Petawawa in Ontario, Pentland had served earlier at Gagetown and his family still lives near the New Brunswick base.
