Alumni Association holding auction
The University of Maine Alumni Association recently announced the opening of the second Black Bear Online Auction on April 3. All proceeds will benefit the programs dedicated to the school's 95,000 alumni. Alumni and business sponsors have donated more than 100 unique items that will be up for bid until 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 3. Diana Richardson, assistant to the president of the Alumni Association, said the association hopes to raise between $5,000 and $7,000 through the event. The auction, in its second year, "came from the association's senior staff and was approved by the board of directors last year," said Richardson, who has devoted countless hours to pulling the auction together and making it run smoothly. "Most of the staff and some members of the board have been instrumental in getting the donations and sponsors." The current top 10 items up for auction include a night's lodging in Blue Hill, Maine, a game of golf and lunch at the Penobscot Valley Country Club, a 1993 men's Black Bear Hockey team photo autographed by Shawn Walsh, miscellaneous Black Bear paraphernalia and a Moxie T-shirt.
National Auctioneers Day on Saturday, April 21 Focuses on Charity ...
KANSAS CITY -- Auctioneers across the U.S. and world are conducting charity auctions and making separate donations to charities as part of National Auctioneers Day, on Saturday, April 21. Members of the National Auctioneers Association (NAA) have donated more than $4 million to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital since 1995 to support this chosen charity of NAA. The hospital in Memphis, Tenn., provides pediatric cancer patients with the most advanced care available, and always regardless of the families ability to pay. Auctioneers and auction schools conduct special fundraising auctions for this charity, and other worthy causes in their communities, in April and throughout the year. Perhaps more than any other group, Auctioneers in all specialties routinely use their fundraising skills to help their local civic groups, churches, schools, and U.S.
New bids for duty-free shops
The Airports of Thailand board called yesterday for a fresh round of bidding for the duty-free concession at Suvarnabhumi Airport, signalling a final end to its contract with current operator King Power International. AOT directors also resolved to have all retail tenants at the terminal strike new leases with AOT individually, after the previous board meeting terminated the commercial-area management concession for King Power. Chirmsak Pinthong, an independent director and spokesman for AOT, said the board preferred to have two or three companies manage the airport's duty-free shops. "We want to have more than one operator, to prevent a monopoly," he explained. King Power International could still participate in the new bidding. The board earlier terminated King Power's two concessions on the grounds that they were improper, after the Council of State ruled King Power had intentionally skirted the Public-Private Joint Venture Act.
Richardson bids to buy out Agricore in grain war
WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Privately held James Richardson International Ltd. offered to buy out Agricore United, Canada's largest grain company, Thursday with a friendly all-cash bid of $19.25 a share. Agricore said the offer matched a bid from No. 2 grain handler Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, the latest in Saskpool's five-month quest to control as much as half of Canada's grain industry. But Agricore's board left the door open to a higher bid from Saskpool after rejecting an even higher bid of $20 a share from Richardson that would have locked up shares owned by U.S. agricultural giant Archer Daniels Midland, which holds 28% of Agricore. .
