| Algonquin quits bidding war
Algonquin Power Income Fund has bowed out of the bidding for Clean Power Income Fund, leaving Macquarie Power & Infrastructure Income Fund the sole contender with its $226 million offer. Algonquin Power said yesterday its most recent bid of $5.47 per unit remains on the table, but it declined to match Macquarie's higher bid worth about $6.39 a unit. Frisky Lamb puts Gloucester top
Besides bidding farewell to the stand, the Kingsholm faithful said their farewells to Jake Boer, Peter Richards and Adam Eustace. Boer, Gloucester’s South African flanker, is returning home at the end of the season to pursue outside business interests, while Richards will join London Irish next season and Eustace has signed for Llanelli Scarlets. Richards has been off the booze in a bid to boost his England prospects, and could be the only one of the trio not nursing a hangover this morning. Newcastle’s headaches began yesterday morning, when they woke at their Gloucester hotel to find that the kitbag containing all 30 pairs of the team’s shorts had been stolen. It hardly ranked alongside Pickles the dog sniffing out the Jules Rimet trophy in 1966, but the Falcons were still grateful to the local schoolboy who discovered them in his back garden — and his dad who drove them to the ground in time to spare the players’ blushes.
Steinbrenners pull out of bidding group
The Steinbrenner family and the real estate development company Tishman-Speyer have dropped out of Excelsior Racing Associates, one of the groups that is bidding on the franchise held by the New York Racing Association, a spokesman for the Steinbrenners and the company said Monday. The announcement came three days after Jennifer Steinbrenner, the daughter of New York Yankees managing partner George Steinbrenner, filed for divorce from her husband, Steve Swindal, a member of the Excelsior partnership and a general partner of the Yankees. After the announcement of the divorce filing, Excelsior said that Swindal would remain a member of the partnership. "The Steinbrenner family and all of their related entities have withdrawn from the Excelsior bid," Howard Rubenstein, the Steinbrenner spokesman, said in a statement.
Bids opened for landfill expansion
In the discussion and planning stages for years, Defiance County's landfill expansion turned from words to action Thursday when bids were opened for the project. Three bidders offered estimates for the first six-acre expansion on 78 acres due south of the existing landfill. The last area on the current landfill is expected to be filled in December, according to Defiance County Environmental Services director Tim Houck. The lower bidder for general work was Melco Inc., Archbold, at $1,739,756. That firm also had the low alternate bid ($223,620) for such things as topsoil removal, fence construction and surface water diversion. Other bids were received from R.P. Jergens, Vandalia, $1,820,254 for general work, $271,016 for the alternate bid; and Comanco Environmental Corp., Plant City, Fla., $3,199,016 for general work, $343,925 for the alternate bid.
