Kovels' List of Top Antiques Searches Reflect Current Events

Kovels has released the Top 20 list of antiques and collectibles for March based on results of hundreds of thousands of searches on its website. The top three searches - Pottery, Glass and Furniture - rarely change and are always the major areas of interest because they are useful antiques or collectibles found in every home. But the other items reflect a special interest often influenced by current news or auctions.

For example, the recent ruling against selling war medals has created a problem for dealers and a change in prices of World War II souvenirs so it moved to number 10. The auctions of several large toy collections created extra publicity and interest in toy prices, and Toys made it into the 7th position. The entire top 20 list follows:

Pottery and porcelain Glass Furniture Jewelry Bottles Metals Toys Prints, pictures, paintings, paper Royal Doulton World War II Stoves Coca-Cola Advertising Alabaster Silver plate Lighters Folk art Occupied Japan Weapons Music

Pre-wireless spectrum auction manoeuvring

OTTAWA — As reporters arrived at the Château Laurier hotel ballroom last week where Quebecor Inc. chief executive Pierre Karl Péladeau was set to deliver a speech on the wireless industry — and announce possible plans for his media company to jump into the fast-growing market — officials from the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association were waiting.

They handed out a 16-page critique of a recent report published by telecom consultancy SeaBoard Group that said Canada's wireless adoption, at 58%, was a “national disgrace" compared with other industrialized nations, and that Canadians pay roughly 56% more for their cellphone service than Americans do.

SeaBoard said increased competition would likely drive down cellphone bills and boost cellphone penetration, and as a result recommended that Ottawa reserve spectrum space for a new wireless competitor.

Nevada Auction Firm President Facing Criminal Theft Charges

The head of an auction firm advertising itself as Nevada's largest is facing criminal charges in the theft of cars, guns, jewelry, televisions, clothing and other items.

Court records show that Premier Estate Auctions president Kelly Sue Jackson is due in Las Vegas Justice Court on June 28th on burglary and grand larceny charges.

Attempts to locate Jackson were unsuccessful. Company telephones have been disconnected.

Her lawyer declined comment.

The Nevada state Consumer Affairs division says it's got at least eight customer complaints against Premier Estate Auctions.

Court documents show that at least three other people have filed civil complaints against Jackson and Premier Estate Auctions for not repaying loans, breach of contract or fraud.

Prince Charles: Troubled landmark up for bids

The oft-troubled Prince Charles Hotel in downtown Fayetteville is scheduled for auction this morning. Again.

For the second time since 1991, the Prince Charles is in foreclosure. This is the third auction since then for the sale of the building.

And once again, the bank holding the note may end up buying the hotel.

Whoever takes over faces a pile of neglect and ill will.

I have found the worst hotel in the country. ... Filthy rooms, rude staff, no AC, dishonest staff. I would rather stay at a soup kitchen. — December 2006 customer review of the Prince Charles on Yahoo Travel.

The current owner, R.K. Properties of Rockville, Md., put off critical maintenance and scrimped on staff and service, according to court records, customer reviews and other sources.
